Excessive hits in statistics

Excessive hits in statistics

Postby newtech1 on Thu Feb 10, 2011 2:29 am

I have a blog owner that made me aware of a statistic that does not make sense. Under their statistics there is a Referrer URL that shows 3256 hits.
That number is very high, their average referrer hits for other URLs is 1, 4, 13, 14, nothing like 3256.
Any idea why this URL would be so high? Especially since it is not even a specific post.

Can you explain in more detail how the stastics section works?

There is such a thing as "referrer spam" (or since someone decided it should be misspelled, "referer spam", which you can probably google and read about more.

But, the idea is that spammers get website administrators to go their website by falsely inserting the referer field, so then you say, "oh gee - someone linked to my site - I wonder who they are", and then click on the link, and tada, they've gotten you to their site.

I am not sure if when you put the .../blog/page/9 link - is that the referrer, or is that the referred to page?
