Comments not being delivered

Postby MFenimore on Thu Jun 10, 2010 8:00 am

Not sure why this happened, but all of a sudden, no one is able to leave comments on 2 of our blogs. (We have 4 version 1.2.9_r6922)
All the settings, versions, etc are identical on all of them. They all reside on the same server. (4 separate installations)
As I stated, this problem occurred essentially overnight. I have gone as far as copying the config files from the 2 working blogs to the 2 affected blogs, but that doesn't work.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Do you get an error message?

I'd suspect something changed on your hosting provider side, if it "suddenly" started happening.

Jon,
There are no error messages presented or in any server logs that I can find.
The visitor can fill out the comment, hit send and nothing happens.
It returns you to the post, but the comment is not there.
Nothing that I am aware of has changed on the server side either.

If that were the case, wouldn't all the blogs have the problem?

Thanks.

Ah, I missed that it was only happening on 2 of 4 blogs.
Are they on one installation, or do you have 4 separate installations?

Do the comments show up in the admin side?

Are there any logs in the tmp directory?

Does anything change if you click the "clean tmp" under administration->cleanup?

Jon,
They are 4 different installations each with their own MySQL database.
I have run the clean up in the admin panel a couple of times.
There is nothing showing in the admin side of things either.
In the tmp folder I see numerous files and folders.

Is the clean up utility supposed to clear these? Or does the clean up function only deal with the MySQL database?
(Pardon my ignorance)
When I do a clean up it states that "The temporary folder was successfully cleaned up". But the folders remain.
Folder settings are 777 on the tmp root folder. But all subsequent inside folders are 700 and owned by Apache:Apache. (Linux server btw)
The "stray" files in tmp are cleaned out however.
I see 16 cache folders (0-9 and a-f).
2 other folders with numbers; 1 and 6.
All of these have 700 permissions and owned by Apache except folders 1 and 6. They are 775.

This is perplexing to say the least.
I do have SSH access to the server and can run as root if that helps in solving this.

Thanks for your time and patience.

The folders probably stay, since they'll be used again. And some files in the tmp directory will immediately be recreated again, since you are viewing a page in the admin that says "temp dir cleaned", which then those files will be put back in the cache. (all pages in LifeType are generated, saved in the tmp directory and shown to the user).

If you have files with old timestamps in the tmp directory, then that would be a problem. But, it sounds like you aren't having that issue (a permission issue on some setups).

I'm at a loss as to what the problem could be. The POST request is going through, redirecting back to the right place, but the comment isn't being saved. How about a plugin? Can you move/rename any plugin directories for a minute?

Thanks again John.
We only have 1 plugin installed. The Sociable plugin.
I "turned" it off, but that didn't make any difference.

In the permissions list, there are 2 references to comments: update_comment and view_comments.
Both are core elements and not admin specific.
Should there be one for add_comment? If so, how do I add it?

Thanks.

There probably isn't an "add comment" permission - but just the setting in blog settings to allow comments at all. (and then each post has a setting for enabling comments as well). But, if those were set incorrectly, you would see an error message about comments not being allowed.

I suspect the only way I'll be able to figure it out is to get shell access to your server, and poke around. I'll need access to the lifetype admin, as well as the lifetype files, and apache access/error logs.

Yeah, I had thought about the shell access being the best way for you to troubleshoot this.
I'll have to run this past the "powers that be" and will let you know.
I should have an answer sometime today about that.

Thanks again.

It turns out (unless you modified the settings after first reporting the error), that when making a comment it doesn't return you to the post, but instead goes to the summary page, and that is because the script_name was changed to summary.php, which caused the post URLs for the POST/form for the comments to go to summary.php instead of index.php. The script_name setting is only for when you have some other software that has an index.php installed in the same directory as lifetype, and so you rename LifeType\s index.php to lifetype.php or something, and then allow the other software to use his index.php.

You can't set that setting to any other file except lifetype's index.php (unless you know what you are doing, and even then maybe not). :)
